    Describe your project:

yushang ZHANG, rajiv SEWTAHAL, & riemer POSTMA: Within the framework of the Vertical Village research in The Why Factory studio in TU Delft, we strive to explore a new way to get the joy of village living without occupying as much land resources as traditional villages do. Having analyzed the pros and cons of typical spatial organization of both traditional village and urban high-rise residence, we came up with the idea of “3-D plot division” inside a vertical volume to realize the idea of vertical village.

The architecture of this project oscillates between historic lineage and most advanced contemporary atmospheres. Advanced computational techniques collide with romantic desires to produce an elegant space for the performance of operas, historic as well as novel ones.

albrecht von ALVENSLEBEN: Albrecht von Alvensleben designs highly abstracted pictorial compositions, in which he combines objects of daily life in an unique mixture of perspective, light and sharpness, in order to transform them into surreal formations. Old doors and glasses from his grandmother’s house frequently serve as pictorial objects, which he highlights with a car’s backlight to photograph them. Without any digital manipulation richly coloured shapes are created and depending on the light reflexion, they produce multicoloured oscillating and metallic glowing surfaces.

  • TARP 2012: Not Nature
    new york NEW YORK

Just one week left to lend your support to Tarp‘s upcoming issue, “Not Nature.”

“Not Nature” is interested in exploring historical and contemporary architectural positions in regard to natural systems—aesthetic, synthetic, philosophical, autonomous, not autonomous, investigative, social and political. The question is to explore whether architecture can build form without a clear process-based model to replicate. . . . The issue includes major contributors from philosophy and the history of science such as Graham Harman, Timothy Morton, and Peter Galison, writing alongside architectural theorists and practitioners such as Antoine Picon, Catherine Ingraham, Ed Eigen, David Gissen, David Ruy, and many others. Tarp is an annual publication of the Pratt Institute Graduate Arch. & Urban Design program.

    Concept & Technology
The overall approach is driven by the site-specific requirements of Sarapiqui: demanding minimum interference with the surroundings, yet establishing a clear visual interaction with the jungle. Given the context; a protected national park, the main design challenge is how to create a building that can integrate into the atmospheric layers of the Jungle while simultaneously leaving a minimal footprint in terms off tear & wear on the forest. A lightweight and light permeable façade principle came up ad the solution. The Building is highly sustainable & at the same time the façade is emphasizing the particular atmosphere of the jungle.

“The Sniper’s Log – Architectural Chronicles of Generation X”

“This compilation of texts written since 1986 reveals a parallel activity to Alejandro Zaera-Polo’s professional life. The book is like a sniper’s log, a register of events and accumulated experience, for the purpose of identifying tendencies and assessing performance, rather than to establish truths. Written for different media and formats, texts are threaded together as a biographical experience determined by temporal and geographical factors. More than 500 images capture the time of these writings, providing a background to trigger associations.”

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

steve MOODY: This project is an investigation into the effects of physical and visual fragmentation in the context of a tower generated through a process of variable extrusion. Traditional notions of separation, interiority and image are challenged through this method of fracturing. Conceived as a portion of a project that includes a large scale particle collider and laboratories for nuclear research, the tower is intended as an icon for the scientific rejuvenation of Los Angeles and the uncertain nature of modern particle science.

-adjective: having no measurable quantity or magnitude
-noun: the lowest point or degree

Zero weight: Mazda’s long-time commitment to low weight is driven by the belief that effortless cornering and acceleration should be at the heart of every car we design. Our featherweight icon — the MX-5 Miata, tipped the scales at a little over 2,300 pounds in its first generation. Starting with the MX-5 as a benchmark, the design team has carried out a systematic process of reduction and consolidation.
