  • Plastic Vases

    fort collins COLORADO

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
Mark DINEEN: These plastic vases are an exercise in opposition; high / low, old / new, organic / synthetic, mass / craft. Using disposable glass flower vases to create a sacrificial mold, new plastic is rotationally-molded within to capture their surface and composition…

Mark’s practice collects specific knowledge by exploring the material vernacular of our modern day. Through experimentation and iteration, he develops unconventional approaches to working with commonplace materials such as wood, plastic, leather, foam, and cement. His work contrasts the logic and efficiencies of industrial production with the idiosyncratic nature of a craft-driven studio.
His plastic vases are an exercise in opposition; high / low, old / new, organic / synthetic, mass / craft. Using disposable glass flower vases to create a sacrificial mold, new plastic is rotationally-molded within to capture their surface and composition. Color both disrupts the form and structures new relationships between diverse parts of a whole, offering a sense of logic within a grotesque and vibrant object.

sP: What or who influenced this project?
MD: I’m perpetually influenced by everything from Bauhaus masters like Joseph Albers, to contemporary artists and designers like Gaetano Pesce, Heather McGill, Jerzy Seymour, and Martino Gamper.

sP: What were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
MD: Lou Reed is a safe bet for music. John Baldessari’s catalogue raisonné has been on my desk for some time. Star Trek TNG is the best show ever made.

sP: Whose work is currently on your radar?
MD: Chris Schanck is always a winner. Bertjan Pot, Jerzy Seymour, Katie Stout, David Brooks, Ania Jaworska, OOIEE, and on and on. I try to pull from as many varied sources as I can. I like the challenge of finding common ground amongst disparate bodies of work.
