    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
The LADG: This project is a series of unbuilt projects for a music festival in Coachella Valley, California.

Team: Andrew HOLDER, Claus Benjamin FREYINGER, Jon RIEKE, Kenji HATTORI-FORTH, Trenmen YAU, Evan ORF, Taylor HALAMKA.

Our concept for the 2018 Coachella Music and Arts Festival seeks to continue the firm’s research of the English picturesque in the context of a music festival. This iteration Reappropriates the catalog of objects (architectural landscape features such as follies, ha-has, and viewpoints) that worked to produce the pictorial effects of landscape painting within real space – anew and large. Lumps, clumps, and masses made it possible, in a sense, to occupy the picture. The proposition is that the installation is a “full scale model” more than it is a scene.

The installation is aggressively tactile and rough – it is meant to be experienced in ways that aren’t strictly optical. Most of the building materials are in raw form without a high degree of finishing of surfaces. It’s difficult to draw and photograph in its totality but easy to inhabit. There is no “front”, visitors have to amble around to find their own point of entry, nor is there an easy way to delineate hard boundaries that determine what is “in” or “out” of the installation. The edge is porous, inviting people to wander inside, through, atop, and underneath, so that the project of picture-making is constantly being re-cast as the project of inhabitation.
