suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
Yi Ning LUI and Akhil MATHEW: The project is informed by how it is read at three different scales, the distant scale of the city, the intermediate scale of a building, and lastly, at the intimate or human scale. The volumetric surfaces we designed have a large impact on the spatial experience of our building, as their surface geometry oscillates between the man made and the natural, as well as the familiar and unfamiliar.

Our approach to this mixed-use development/flower market explores varying degrees of enclosure that flicker between the inside and outside, as well as the artificial and real. The project is informed by how it is read at three different scales, the distant scale of the city, the intermediate scale of a building, and lastly, at the intimate or human scale. The volumetric surfaces we designed have a large impact on the spatial experience of our building, as their surface geometry oscillates between the man made and the natural, as well as the familiar and unfamiliar. Surfaces spill over spatial boundaries and flicker in resolution from the recognizable to pure pixelation. The views, surfaces and varying degrees of enclosure generate multi-layered experiences that invite a sense of discovery and wonder.
sP: What or who influenced this project?
YNL & AM: This project explores varying degrees of enclosure and flickers between the inside and outside, as well as the artificial and real. We drew influence from Henry Moore’s Helmet sculptures. We were interested in the sense of discovery that arose from partially concealing the encased objects, public plaza and volumetric surfaces, and curating very specific spatial experiences and views.
sP: What were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
YNL & AM: We were particularly interested in the reading A Picturesque Stroll around “Clara-Clara” by Yve-Alain Bois and John Shepley. Our studio reviewed the qualities of the picturesque, notably, the disruption of the promenade in favor of the oblique. In terms of music, we both like listening to Breakbot.
sP: Whose work is currently on your radar?
YNL & AM: The work of BairBalliet inspired the aesthetic style and imagery.
