suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
The Alley FELLOWSHIP: The Alley Fellowship produces a two-month rotating exhibition and lecture series and is open to emerging, young, progressive artists in Los Angeles. The fellowship will be awarded to six artists, selected by a seven-member jury consisting of artists, designers, and architects from the A+D Museum and Rios Clementi Hale Studios. The jury will select based on which projects best embody the spirit of transdisciplinary creative exploration, a key focus area for RCHS and A+D.
“A fundamental aspect of the A+D’s mission is to produce a platform for analysis, exploration, and for the ever-expanding perspectives of our field regardless of their historical arenas. The Alley Fellowship is a direct expression of this mission, it explores the means and modes of contemporary inquiry and experimentation within the field. There could not be a better partner in this endeavor than Rios Clementi Hale Studios, their office, their ethos and approach to the discipline as a whole is a snapshot of the success that can come from such an approach of multi-disciplinary investigation and we are privileged and thrilled to embark on this new endeavor with a long-standing family member of the museum,” says Anthony Morey, Executive Director and Chief Curator at the A+D Museum.
“Our practice is always looking beyond the world of architecture in order to stay informed and collaborative. We are thrilled to partner with the A+D Museum on this opportunity. The interesting notion about the name — Architecture plus Design — is that the ‘+’ sign is symbolic of our firm’s ideology; when we add more than one form of art to our methodology, it becomes something larger and more informative to our explorations as designers and practitioners,” says Frank Clementi, FAIA, Partner at Rios Clementi Hale Studios.
The program grew organically out of a shared belief in providing a platform that supports emerging multi-disciplinary artists. The Alley Gallery, the fellowship’s namesake, will provide a dedicated space where emerging artists can contribute their voice to the overarching narrative of transdisciplinary design.
The selected fellows will receive logistical, curatorial, and financial support to implement a design installation within the Alley Gallery at A+D. Additionally, each fellow will present their installation, design process, and creative viewpoints during a guest-lecture event at Rios Clementi Hale Studios’ new offices located in the Crenshaw Creative Corridor.
Artist applications will be accepted on a rotating basis; more information and details can be found on the A+D website, www.aplusd.org. The first installation will debut in winter 2018 and will then occur on a rotating two-month basis.

About A+D
A+D Architecture and Design Museum was established in 2001 in response to the need for a space that would be devoted expressly to the exhibition of architecture and design in Los Angeles.
