    suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

josh TARON: the proposal, gorgoneion, advocates the injection of a high speed rail (hsr) line into chicago as an amplification of latant protocols within the city. it assumes an aesthetic paradigm historically rooted in the history of chicago, while consciously averting mimicry of antiquated notions of urban planning. gorgoneion asks the question, “can chicago’s hsr serve as a prototype for productive logistics within anaesthetic environments, as well?” in environments where form and architecture have been subsumed into larger systems of organization as something invisible, could it not also “reappear” as something else? that we could design our cities in such a way that their atrophy or intensification would serve to evolve rather than replace existing form(s) might enable higher orders and longer durations of behavior within urban environments.

surrealist swirls wash over realism in the illustrations of linn olofsdotter. each object, image and pattern is continuous with next in the creation of a flow within each illustration as well as across the body of her work. human features mutate into feather-like tendrils in a land of dense transparencies from which unpredictable patterns emerge.

mesmerizing eyes caked with eyeliner pierce through high-gloss magazine spreads in the work of miles aldridge. in his photographs beauty is amplified to the point of plasticity. models read as mannequin androids frozen in his intensely saturated color palette. over the top glamour is refashioned into stunning compositions of color, light and figure. hyper-surreality explodes into vivid hues that beautifully juxtapose the porcelain skin of his subjects.

matias del CAMPO & sandra MANNINGER: blossom explores the opportunities present in the morphologies of floral entities as point of departure for the design of architectural conditions. inherent qualities such as florination, plication, venation and ornament form the ground for a variety of speculations on spatial conditions. the sensorial and spatial experiences co-notated with the manifold qualities of blooming flowers, from their topological qualities to the distribution of sepals and petals forming the body of the flower, are scrutinized for their architectural qualities and incorporated in the design of blossom

born of the flow of wind and legendary flying robes, the new concept car from mazda, taiki, embodies motion in its formal lines. two flows invert and overlap to create a clamshell that cradles the entrails of the vehicle. subtle reveals show the car’s interiors as well as the nesting of the two outer shells. subtle lines stretch like tendons across the ribcage of the car, disappearing and reappearing as functional fins across its grille. its doors appear seamless with the ability to crack the external shell and rotate upward in wing-like extension.

from MOMA: new designapproaches in science, design, and architecture have replaced a top-down description of form by botom-up rules of formation: materials carry information within them about how to behave, grow, combine, assemble, and proliferate. rules of six is an open exploration of self-assembly and modularity across scales. through a large wall relief, an algorithm running live in the gallery, and images of nanostructures, the project presents an experiment in material formation tied to the potential of six-sided symmetries common to the molecular lattices of a large range of materials.

from MOMA: monocoque is a construction technique whereby weight is carried by an object’s skin instead of an internal structure. in this project, loadbearing areas are thicker, and veinlike, loadbearing elements have been built into the skin where needed. the composite prototype models, fabricated by a polyjet three-dimensional printer, represent three strategies the design and fabrication of single-shell structures.

jessica eve ROSENKRATZ and jesse LOUIS-ROSENBERG:nervous system creates experimental jewelry, combining nontraditional materials like silicone rubber and stainless steel with rapid prototyping methods. we find inspiration in complex patterns generated by computation and nature. silicone rubber is cut by waterjet into an organic network of distorting ellipses. the pattern displays shifts in direction and scale, creating a sense of movement and tension. these complex forms recall those of radiolarians, plant cells and even the familiar honey comb.

simple sketches done with a bic ‘fine’ morph into the dense, layered work of artist russ mills. mills scans his sketches into the computer only for them to be regurgitated back onto large canvas and then hand-altered again. through this feedback between the analog and the digital, his portraits fade from sharp detail to pixelated patterns and ink blots. the collision of realism and abstraction in combination with a strategic use of color gives the works a cohesion within their multiple variations.

facets become smooth in the new reventon [or fighting bull] by lamborghini. exquisitely curved carbon fiber panels are attenuated into distinct creases that accentuate the features of the car. separate panels are not made to accommodate the form but to accommodate function in order to allow for single surfaces of multiple complex geometries. features such as vents and headlights peel away from the smooth continuous surfaces into faceted objects. as a result all functional components are integral to the overall sleek form of the design.
