Every four or five years since 1974, the issue of opening the abandoned and fenced city that lies inside the Green line in Cyprus is brought forward. This sparks a recurring, yet fruitless discussion with Cypriot government and state institutions on one side and refugees, individually or collectively, on the other. The discussion is about whether the city should be returned right away in its current condition to its inhabitants or alternatively be kept fenced for some years in order to be restored.

    suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

alex LOZANO: the project explores ideas of prosthetic architecture. prosthetics can be subdivided into two categories: 1) those that rehabilitate and 2) those that enhance. the idea of prosthesis sets up an interesting situation which questions the boundaries between existing private areas and adjacent proposed public programs. prosthetic architecture has the ability to “cut out” detrimental facades and compromised structure and replaces them with a new formal species which will set up a dialogue between old and new.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

adrian CORTEZ + alex HOLTZER: This design of an Alessi showroom and gallery in Houston is an argument of sensibility and surface, and is a modern interpretation of rustication. Individual modules emphasize a performative skin, and surface animation is achieved through deformation, dematerialization, and aperture. The project’s unique interior argues affect and sensation through its direct relationship with the skin.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

warren WEAVER/graham GORDON/ashley RYAN: This project is a 250′ cinema complex built for the city of Henderson, KY. The amalgam of heavy field research, local and regional contextual consideration, and the desire to generate surreal social and visual atmospheres both within the cinema and within the city helped drive our design process. The overall form is defined by strategic program massing wrapped in an indexical skin system. The top of the tower holds one imax theater and two typical theaters and an observation platform, while the ground level is comprised of retail, park and performance space.
