Exhibition Explores the Future As Envisioned By a New Generation of Architects and Designers

To design anything, it is necessary to first imagine an audience, a site, a purpose, or even a world. It has to be made up. MADE UP: Design’s Fictions presents the work of major and emerging international practices that forecast, hypothesize, muse, skylark, role-play, put-on-airs, freak-out or otherwise fake-it to produce work that is relevant to our increasingly confusing and accelerated world. MADE UP is a new type of exhibition — a self-recording, 1:1 map of questions and propositions: dreams as program; science fiction as precedent; cults of commerce; objects as ideas; strange-ified banality; truth-revealing jokes; false histories; and elaborated scenarios. MADE UP is the first of a series of year-long inquiries that bring themes from the interdisciplinary work and research of the graduate Media Design Program (MDP) into dialogue with issues in culture, technology, and creative practice worldwide.

The exhibition will run January 29 through March 20 and will be staged in the Wind Tunnel Gallery (where supersonic jets were once secretly tested), which is located at Art Center College of Design’s South Campus.

Raby, Partner, Dunne + Raby and Bruce Sterling, Author, Tomorrow Now and Shaping Things. MADE UP curator and Media Design Program faculty member Tim Durfee will moderate.
Additional panel discussions, screenings, and readings will take place throughout the duration of the exhibition.

All MADE UP events are free and open to the public. Normal hours of operation for the Wind Tunnel Galley are Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment.
