suckerPUNCH: describe your project.
oliver ZELLER + tino SCHAEDLER: “2011” is a teaser short, a faux commercial revealing the Immersive Cocoon, a future concept that provokes a new conception of interface technology.
In the teaser, the Immersive Cocoon is placed within an entirely digital setting inspired by the penultimate scene from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The lead actor of that film, Keir Dullea reprises his starring role. Mr Dullea was filmed multi-camera, against green screen atop a backlit-plexi floor on a shoestring budget and then integrated into the CG set where he encounters the Immersive Cocoon.
sP: what or who influenced this project?
mA: Tino Schaedler’s Immersive Cocoon design in 2008 inspired me, I immediately drew parallels to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey upon seeing it. I also see this as an extension of my collaborations with director Joseph Kosinski (TRON Legacy) at KDLAB on projects including iSpec and Les Jumelles.
sP: what were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
mA: Specific to the project, as this was developed over the course of 27 months - The Ridley Scott directed Apple commercial “1984”, conceived by Hayden, Thomas & Clow at Chiat/Day. And of course, 2001: A Space Odyssey & related ancillary materials, books including Taschen’s Stanley Kubrick Archives, 2001: Filming the Future and the classical soundtrack featuring Also Sprach Zarathustra and The Blue Danube.
sP: whose work is currently on your radar?
mA: Depends on the moment. Just now - the photography of Kristopher Grunert, Jason Koxvold & Yousuf Karsh, manhua artist Benjamin, the writings of Rem Koolhaas, Michael Mann……
