ooking for the magic is max g MORTON’S follow up to indestructible wolves of the apocalypse junkyard. eleven stories chock full of depravity, angst, and humor moving from the suburbs of florida to the streets of new york city. who can resist chapter titles like “a direct to video portrayal of suburban life featuring a teenage klansman, a crackbaby count, and an autistic weatherman” and descriptions such as “ the three of us had our way with the night , and it was ugly. we looked like we just made love to a slaughterhouse, while the walls looked like a mental institution just threw an art show-slash-suicide-party.”

lisandro ALONSO’S liverpool presents one man’s haunting, beautiful journey in argentina. the lead character, a sailor named farrel, takes leave of his ship to visit his family which he left behind decades before. the trip takes him from the port at cape horn to the snowy, remote village of his youth. the film is spare on dialogue and concentrates on watching farrel as he gets dressed, eats, drinks vodka, hitchhikes, and drinks more vodka. the landscapes through which he travels are gorgeously rendered, from the sea to the port and its shipping containers, or to the strange interiors of a cafeteria and an abandoned ferry. the camera lingers on the spaces well after farrel leaves and at times allows him to become a speck within the frame as if he is somehow incidental to the film. simultaneously, his presence sustains the film forward towards its enigmatic ends.
