The projects include renovation for de Ricou (a residential tower), Waterscape (an outdoor pool with changing rooms), PlaySquare (a children’s play area), Entry Lobbies, Carpark Lobbies and Breakers (a café).

davidclovers has designed a series of projects that tie together the common areas along the podium of the four towers at The Repulse Bay. The project includes the Outdoor Pool and Changing Rooms, Children’s Play Area, Entry Lobbies and Car park Lobbies. It builds upon the growing trend in Asian developments to produce spaces that are part recreation, part social condenser, and part infrastructure. The project seeks to diversify these otherwise separated spaces while at the same time unifying their sensibilities.

davidclovers’s design for breakers café is their first full brand concept and design project. Using the existing columns as focal points to re-shape the space, the design for breakers shifts the attention away from the walls to the ceiling, giving it a new sense of openness and extension. Using a mixture of contemporary geometry, abstract graphics and rusticated recycled materials, the design bravely assembles a new sensibility of the café experience. Flanking the gym and the pool, it is an intensely colorful and vibrant environment with spectacular forms while at the same time, the design remains open ended and comfortable to retreat and relax in.

Set along the coast of Stanley Bay, davidclovers’ Beach House takes the idea of adaptive re-use to new lengths. The project is both a gut renovation of four apartment units and a restoration of the exterior. Re-working the edges, top and underbelly of the building the design includes three additions that unfurl into the garden, wrap the roof patio and interweave through the common space stair.

Situated in a small ground floor space below a residential tower in Hong Kong, Morningstar Preschool makes use of two core design elements in a children’s educational facility—wainscoting and lighting—to create an innovative educational space. davidclovers uses these two elements to unify rooms that are separated and to convert circulation space into spaces of education. The bamboo wainscoting transforms from benches to shelving, to reading “pads” and to climbing walls, moving in and out of class rooms and hallway areas.

davidclovers was hired in 2010 to work on two key areas of an eco-tourist resort project that intends to be a flagship project for China demonstrating how architecture can both re-work and reinvigorate sensitive habitat sites. Using innovative construction methods and design processes both projects “farm” the existing terrain of the site finding its latent potentials.

davidclovers: At eye-level with the top of IFC, the tallest building in Hong Kong, the Barker Residence holds stunning views of Victoria Harbor. The project is the first of a series of projects designed by davidclovers for a developer of residential properties in Hong Kong. The basic approach is to hone in on the most potent areas of the existing layout, and enhance them. At Barker Residence, davidclovers reworks the unit horizontally and vertically using a series of subtly inflected walls and artificially-lit ceilings to bend space around corners and through floors. The design thoughtfully subdues the palatial scale of the flat while delicately intensifying its hidden potentials. The existing vestibule is broken open to the full panorama of the skyscrapers along the “fragrant harbor”, gently combining the living area and entry.

suckerPUNCH: describe your project:

davidclovers: House DE is an “infill” townhouse, spectacularly sited on a hillside above Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong. Combining two existing units into one, the design uses the volumes of three staircases to blend, burrow and interlock spaces vertically across four floors. Each “interaction” is materially monolithic, using stone, wood and a series of delicate aluminum fins. Defined by these fins, the texture and form of the lantern-volume subtly changes shape and depth, casting shadow and emitting light in different ways throughout the day.

Immuring (2010)

suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

davidclovers: Immuring consists of six full-scale prototypes, each explore different possibilities for the cladding system for Lunar House. Designed as a speculative suburban home for a developer in Houston, Texas (Hometta Inc), a fresco designed by Reas is immured into the cladding and mass of the building. The illusive and painterly effects common to Reas’ artwork are digitized through his custom software, formed, etched, and manipulated architecturally by davidclovers.
