EADO (Ellie ABRONS) & SIFT (Adam FURE): The visual encounter is a defining experience for both fashion and architecture. Whether it is the longing gaze upon an object of desire or the perfect view, seeing is an essential act for both fields and their audiences. When the two come together, however, conventional divisions too often prevail as architecture assumes its position as the background for fashion (consider storefront windows or runway shows).

Scott CLAASSEN: Totally Useless Totems develops a series of architectural totems and their configurations, free of prescribed function or meaning in order to create spaces defined by subjective relationships. These totems are objects that have figure, but shape the space around them primarily through experiential, tactile, or narrative relationships. In this way they embody both the graphic characteristics of images as well as the spatial potential of objects occupying territory.

Dorimar del RÍO VÉLEZ: FLATend challenges preconceptions of the architectural volume and its representation through the use of graphics applied and manipulated at different scales. Nick SAFLEY: Animal House proposes a series of above ground tornado shelters placed within suburban homes and figured as architectural characters. Normally these exist as generic steel or reinforced concrete boxes hidden within the wall cavity and possessing extreme material durability to resist extreme weather that might destroy the structure around it. Taking the suburban single-family house as site these hyper-durable cores are freed and given personas and postures that enrich the interior with implied subjectivity and vitality.

The “Possible Mediums” Conference, which took place at The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture from February 07-10, 2013, brought together 18 designers, 120 students (from the four co-host schools: The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture, University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning and University of Kentucky College of Design), and special guests John McMorrough and Jeffrey Kipnis, to participate in design workshops and formal discussions surrounding the question of mediums in contemporary architecture.

venice ITALY

Venice, Italy - Grounds for Detroit is a collaborative installation by five young American practices working collectively: *Alibi Studio; Ellie Abrons with Adam Fure; MILLIGRAM-office; SCHAUM/SHIEH; and Thom Moran. The project is part of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2012 Biennale di Venezia, curated by David Chipperfield under the theme of Common Ground. In part, the installation revisits a collaborative project from 2010, where the five practices collectively bought the abandoned single-family house at 13178 Moran St. in Detroit, Michigan for $500 cash at public auction and constructed five distinct architectural interventions. The project is on view from August 29-November 25, 2012.
