“Before the term spline came to refer to a mathematical function producing smoothness (and subsequently, in design software, to a smooth curve with control points) it was once an actual physical drafting tool, a flexible metal or wood strip with weights used to hold the spline in place. This tool developed out of necessity to design smooth, aerodynamic forms and leveraged specific material properties . . .”

Oxides from the welding process leave a rich coloration and evidence of the manual TIG welding process (joints are welded on the backside with ERCuSi-A Silicon Bronze filler rod).

In the evolution of image culture from Marshall McLuhan’s claims of medium supplanting message to the mid-’90s paperless studios’ fetishization of computer rendering, the rise of suckerPUNCH has added a new visceral dimension. . . Projects published on suckerPUNCH . . . are elevated beyond the ordinary and contribute to a new kind of nuanced visual discourse uniquely enabled by the Web. The underlying visual logic of this discussion is the “field,” a now default technique for describing environment and indexing parametric process. Sensorial, geometric, and spatial, the field conveniently conflates the three into a rich digital milieu. . . .

  • Digital Novelty: Crystallised Geometrics
    paris FRANCE

Over 100 iterations and studies which challenges, and produced through, the premise of digital production and analogue tooling, “Digital Novelty” is a series of design-research that is an intersection between of platonic solids and the notion of basic geometric shapes, assisted by 3-D modelling software (Rhinoceros 3D), 3-D printing technologies (additive manufacturing processes), and hand-drawn inked on vellum exercises. The research and development of “Digital Novelty: Crystallised Geometrics” reveals itself through a feedback system that carefully interrogates a simple method of production and design.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Niccolò CASAS: Analogy is part of series of design experimentations conducted as MPhil/PhD candidate at The Bartlett under the supervision of Dr. Marjan Colletti and Dr. Marcos Cruz, it concerns the use of fractal geometry as medium to codify and to simulate Decadence.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Wendy W. FOK: Systematic Narcissism is a hybridization through the notion of the planetary grid system and the symmetry of narcissism. The installation is based on the obsession of the physical reflection of the object/subject relationship, created by the idea of man-made versus planetary projected planes (grids) of which humans have made onto the earth (i.e. Pierre Charles L’Enfant plan 1791 of the golden section projected onto Washington DC).

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

vincenzo REALE, christina COGDELL, & mara MORAL CORREA: The brief for this project required transforming sheet material into three-dimensional base components aggregated at progressively larger scales. The geometry and material properties of the base component informed its connection to other components, as well as the geometry and assembly logic of the whole, moving back and forth between material and digital explorations.
