Gilles Retsin will present an Object-Oriented project for computational design and architecture, inpsired by the work of Graham Harman, Levi Bryant and Ian Bogost. Previous traces of OO within architecture and theory will be uncovered, from Christopher Alexander to materialist and marxist thinking of for example, Walter Benjamin. The lecture will develop an argument of OO as an emerging paradigm, based in the hacker-mentality of a new, heterogenious and extremely diverse generation of upcoming architects and designers which use digital methodologies at the core of their work—but in often unorthodox ways.

    lecture: Gilles RETSIN
    Friday, 04/12
6.00pm / Docklands Campus, AVA building

OOD is a new paradigm in contemporary philosophy, physics, computer programming and critical theory and can be understood as the process of planning a system of interacting objects for the purpose of solving a specific problem. In contrast to contemporary thought and design, which views things as the aggregation or assembly of smaller bits and parts, in OOD new objects emerge out of an ecology of interaction of multiple and heterogeneous objects. . . .

SoftKill Design (nicholette CHAN, gilles RETSIN, aaron SILVER, & sophia TANG): Softkill Design investigated the architectural potential of the latest Selective Laser Sintering technologies, testing the boundaries of large scale 3-D printing by designing with computer algorithms that micro-organize the printed material itself. With the support of Materialise, Softkill Design produced a high-resolution prototype of a 3D Printed house at 1:33 scale. The model consists of 30 detailed fibrous pieces which can be assembled into one continuous cantilevering structure, without need for any adhesive material.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

nicholette CHAN, gilles RETSIN, aaron SILVER, & sophia TANG: Body topologic explores processes of self-organization which result in complex topological forms. Working with non-linear dynamics and local rules, node-networked bodies generated a variety of surface and volume organizations. These organizations explore algorithmic notions of material intelligence, ultimately producing topological entities that have coherent order when nearing a dynamically stable state.

gilles RETSIN, isaie BLOCH, & corneel CANNAERTS: The workshop introduced an unorthodox, hands-on workflow based on the concept of Object-Orientated Design.
