maxi SPINA: at a time when contemporary digital responses in architecture often emphasize the total erasure of the seam in favor of the smooth, continuous form -suggesting an apparent new type of continuous magical wrap for buildings that would enable them to become literally seamless- the work presented in reflective formations is an endeavor to articulate architecture’s corporeal presence and tectonic basis through a scalar system of subdivision, serialization, repetition and variation without at the same time weakening its capacity for representational values.

the original premise of the studio was to develop a performative surface using light as the main inspiration. my studio took a different approach and we began to investigate the idea of producing an emotional surface. this lead to the idea of investigating different effects try to have an ontological change from an architecture of thinking and process to an architecture of feeling. the response was to create a series of atmospheric installations.

    suckerPUNCH: describe your project:

christian JOAKIM: antlia is a constellation of oscillating mechatronic elements which operate in concert with information absorbed from the surroundings. this “machine pneumatique” exists in a constant condition of latency, a state of digitally filtered reverie, producing an extended composition of experience.modular components made of laser-cut impact-resistant acrylic and mylar materials aggregate to (in)form a hybrid environment consisting of robotic activation and open-loop communication with occupants. movement is achieved via fluidic actuators controlled by electronically conditioned supplies of compressed air. various sensors absorb data from the environment generating a layered reading of the space.

skylar TIBBITS: tesselion is a built project which demonstrates a system of flat panel tessellation derived from complex surfaces to enable ease in constructibility and a directly evolved spatial environment through lighting, programmatic adaptation and structural simplicity. each panel’s uniqueness is afforded by the efficiency of digital fabrication while coded parametric relationships allow an emergent structural efficiency, from a single panel to the complete adaptability of the surface as a whole.

elena MANFERDINI : the installation explores the intricacies of lace at a scale far beyond the intimate size commonly associated with it. made by the knotting and intertwining of multiple threads, the dynamic dance of lace making is brought to the scale of the sci-arc gallery. the antique venetian merletti, the Italian term for lace, are the crenelations that create a complex interface at the top of defensive buildings. the project, which weaves itself along centenary supporting wires hung from above, engages the viewer at an intimate scale as the installation billows up through the space. walking in the gallery, the viewer can appreciate the detail of each element that constitutes the overall form.

    tila

ilona anhava: in the finnish language, the word tila is used loosely in defining locality, state or position. it can be translated into english as ’space’, ‘place’, ‘area’, ‘room’ or ’state of mind’, among other meanings. though sometimes synonymous with spatiality, it has a more finite meaning in connections such as lounge space, storage space or shelf space - and before the second world war the germans spoke of lebensraum - ‘living space’. in finnish, a farm is maatila, literally “land space”, a delimited area for the practice of agriculture. finland’s air space is an undemarcated area which the russians are allowed to violate with the blessing of our government.

from MOMA: new designapproaches in science, design, and architecture have replaced a top-down description of form by botom-up rules of formation: materials carry information within them about how to behave, grow, combine, assemble, and proliferate. rules of six is an open exploration of self-assembly and modularity across scales. through a large wall relief, an algorithm running live in the gallery, and images of nanostructures, the project presents an experiment in material formation tied to the potential of six-sided symmetries common to the molecular lattices of a large range of materials.

quasar is an immersive light and sound space made from prototype membranes and realized as an interactive light/sound object and comprised of a dense array of interlinked elements describing an intricate three-dimensional structure. the gallery is fitted with sensors that draw real-time data from the installation and the people within the exhibition, which is then synchronized with streamed real-time data of solar activity and nuclear processes provided by slac and nasa. this information is then fed back into the object through layers of led strands, re-visualizing the space in order to create an interactive spatial experience.
