Alex WOODHOUSE & Leah ZALDUMBIDE: Desert Driftbot investigates the prospect of an alternative, event-driven, nomadic society, fleeing the overbearing,cosmopolitan lifestyle of urbanity in favor of a simplified yet profound way of living. Seeking respite from a culture of extreme density, poor air quality, automotive dependence, materialism and ownership, this nomadic civilization has emerged in the barren desertscape of the Salton Sea.

The “Possible Mediums” Conference, which took place at The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture from February 07-10, 2013, brought together 18 designers, 120 students (from the four co-host schools: The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture, University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning and University of Kentucky College of Design), and special guests John McMorrough and Jeffrey Kipnis, to participate in design workshops and formal discussions surrounding the question of mediums in contemporary architecture.

Future Cities Lab (jason KELLY JOHNSON & nataly GATTEGNO): Future Cities Lab’s HYDRAMAX Port Machines project proposes a radical rethinking of San Francisco’s urban waterfront post sea-level rise. The proposal renders the existing hard edges of the waterfront as new “soft systems” that would include aquatic parks, community gardens, wildlife refuges and aquaponic farms. A synthetic architecture is introduced that blurs the distinction between building, landscape, infrastructure and machine. Using thousands of sensors and motorized components, the massive urban scale robotic structure harvests rainwater and fog, while modulating air flow, solar exposure and intelligent building systems.
