mike McKAY: The PERFORMA Studio at the UK College of Design is an intensive research and fabrication studio run by professor Mike McKay. McKay’s research work involves the investigation of material systems and design strategies that create multi-performative material systems utilizing optimization, aggregation and efficiency. Simple units and semi-finished materials are physically tested in order to extract potential performative characteristics and limits.

mike MCKAY: Assistant Professor, Michael McKay, taught a PERFORMA workshop at Lund University, School of Architecture, Department of Theoretical and Applied Aesthetics in Sweden. The two week workshop was part of a semester long studio, directed by Abelardo Gonzalez, composed of visiting guest professors.

suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

mike MCKAY + liz SWANSON: BIG PINK is a full-scale installation created for the entry to the Creative Cities Summit in Lexington Kentucky. The installation consists of over 500 hand-cut pieces of rigid insulation, stacked using no glue or fasteners. The stacked layers form a large undulating wall 16’ wide by 22’ high. Large apertures frame certain views to the city and allow for light to project into the space.
