    suckerPUNCH: describe your project:

juliaKOERNER: designing continuous growth through differentiation of parts, by accumulation of cells which are volumetric and porous at the same time; the mutant organs interlock with each other in an intricate way and connect to an overall continuous space.

ink stained beasts battle in the online collaboration between illustrators zak smith, shawn cheng, and nicholas di genova. it is a battle of black ink on white fields in which hybridized creatures and worlds collide. each consecutive illustration builds on the one before it through an undulating narrative that merges the artists and their styles. with an identical palette and subject, the illustrators are able to develop new unique languages of detail within their scenes that becomes dependent on its adjacent illustrations. its a playful, reductive experiment in the development of new technique. “though not exactly an exquisite corpse, it will be exquisite, and there will be many corpses.”

reminiscent of an illuminated manuscript, the typographic illustrations of marian bantjes are a mash up of computer generated and hand crafted designs. tendril-like lines extend from type and expand and contract while wrapping and weaving through the space of the page. contemporary interpretations of classical motifs characterize her work. through repetition and subtle shifts of thematic and formal variation, patterns in her compositions emerge only to be defamiliarized in their reinterpretation.

    suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

florenicaPITA: alice is an installation that takes its form from a tale; its name comes from a narrative that creates multiple fictional landscapes. there is no literal relationship between the installation and the original story by lewis carroll, it is indeed an aim to capture the sensibility and atmosphere that is present in the story and embed the space with it.

with a flash and a stick of incense, rick captures the unseen formal potentials of smoke. as the smoke twirls around and through itself its exquisite beauty is revealed in its multifaceted transparencies. through simple photography technique, the smoke appears to have thickness and volume as it wraps through space. in areas of density, curved vectors appear to form and accentuate the unexpected voluptuous shapes.

the diverse work of evgeny kiselev oscillates between the rigors of symmetry and prolific excess. several compositions begin with vivid tiled patterns that are mirrored again and again until they can no longer be contained and are forced to push beyond the confines of their logic. others, emerge from a single outline that manifests the controlled lawlessness of the work. each piece achieves a complexity of color and layer that continues to build infinitely into the space of the page creating a warping spatial depth.

gordon terry creates ornamented, aqueous landscapes in his paintings through a process dependent on the reaction of acrylic between two unique surfaces. by abandoning typical painting conventions such as the brush, terry also disembodies the relationship between figure and field. he allows figures/fields to form independently and congeal into cells and hybrids that seem protozoan in nature.

“i’m fascinated by the ways in which, for instance, my paintings can reference at once psychedelia, science fiction, modernism, the rococo, decadence, and hermetic texts-wholesome, natural beauty, and toxic, synthetic glamour.”

the dunny is a tabula rasa of plastic cuteness produced by kid robot and tattooed by artists and designers. each dunny becomes customized through decoration of color and line with some shifts in pose and the occasional sword. some artists, like david flores, break down the dunny through a network of lines that create a new reflective cellular armature while still referencing its original form. others, including geoff mcfetridge, disregard form and cover the dunny with a repetitive, ornamental wallpaper creating new figuration within the dunny’s distinctive figure. the dunny collections exist as a rogue’s gallery of hot graffiti artists, illustrators, and other mixed media designers such as queen andrea, kenzo minami, ferric, and deph.
