expanding and contracting lines remap the topography of the human form in the drawings of toyin odutola. odutola’s often androgynous figures have familiar outlines defamiliarized through her language of line and shape that creates a new form of detailed musculature. this musculature is sometimes contained, sometimes extended and sometimes multiplied through the inversion of the common conception of smooth skin. the lines create a cellular formwork which defines and wraps the skin of her subjects.

michael c. place riffs on classic graphic design motifs through a craft-like approach to printed matter. with his firm, build, he employs primarily text, line and blocks of color in his compositions. through this stark palette and its sophisticated look at positive and negative space, a richness of overlap develops as a result of these simple, yet elegant moves. a playfulness that includes vivid colors, little birdies and whimsical lines emanates through his work as yet another layer that gives each composition a fresh identity. each piece defies boundary by oozing and continuing beyond the edge of the page - compositions appear endless.

tomWISCOMBE: this proposal for the european solidarity center in no way tries to represent the events of the 1970s and 1980s; architecture that attempts to do this often remains conceptual and inert. the project instead is a platform for experiencing the site and the history within a new context and new spatial sensibility. it is proposed as a lively, open, urban space which will host both exhibitions on historical events and future-looking research and conferences on contemporary social and political issues.

fictitious biological beings existing in a timeless flux characterize the work of u-ram choe. kinetic sculptures bear the names and narratives of classic scientific rhetoric while breathing and floating into metallic sunsets. entrails of nuts and bolts and wings of razor-sharp steel shift through a multitude of realities in model, drawing, and diagrammatic form. somehow simultaneously familiar and otherworldly, the creatures of u-ram choe possess a compositional flow contrasted by their mechanical limbs. insects look like dragons and birds like sea creatures unified through an exquisite conglomeration of cells and scales into new hybridized scientific classifications of form and movement, nature and machine.

perry hall blends art, architecture, and film in his process-based creations. his pieces act as indexes of the properties of the materials with which he works. he captures different liquids in still or moving images as they react to a myriad of stimuli including sounds, objects, and movement. through these disruptions, microscopic landscapes emerge swirling in reaction. unexpected lines and forms are created that have characteristics of the hand drawn but are actually the results of the intelligence of the given material.

flash artist erik natzke manipulates code in his explorations of shape and color. repeating forms build figurative multiplicities which flicker through intense color gradients across the images. natzke is also often shifting subject matter from pure geometries to line art to the abstraction of reality all while implementing similar code technique. the detail and intricacy which emerges from the employed codes becomes amplified through natzke’s eye for color and composition.

brennan BUCK: technicolor bloom is a full-scale prototype that produces doubly curved, digitally-designed form using completely standard, scalable fabrication technology. it proposes a method and a set of aesthetic principles that extend the architectural potential of topological form by incorporating architectural systems such as structure, aperture, fenestration and construction directly into the project’s geometry.

bolojan DANIEL: “an elegant building should entail an elegant structure and both together should be able to spatialize considerable organizational complexity without descending into visual disorder. like in natural systems, all forms are the result of lawfully interacting forces.” – patrik schumacher – engineering elegance
