the work of chow martin renders surfaces of skin and fur as detailed muscular armatures. nested lines vary in scale in order to create sophisticated variations in differentiation that flow effortlessly along their surfaces. this brother duo comprised of sean and colin chow combine their talents through ink on paper to create intricate compositions that are now infiltrating everything from typography to wallpaper.

florian NIEDWOROK + brigitte SCHWÖLLENBACH: the challenge was to design a colony of villas; on the one hand each villa should differ from the others and on the other hand fuse to one coherent design on the other side using parametric design tools. based on 2d-studies we developed the whole project, including different villa typologies, urban layout and spatial concept on an interior level to create a stringent design concept which can be perceived throughout all levels of the design project . our aim was to connect analog and digital scripting techniques to find a convincing and suitable way of dealing with form, structure and program.

kosukeTSUMURA: i was introduced to FELIBENDY as a fluffy cloud-like material that could be processed into blanket-like fabric tuned to a variety of different thicknesses and hardness’s. that encounter inspires two stories. first was a shape like a cradle, with a depression in the center where a new-born baby could be placed. around it, i envisaged ivy-like relieves to signify celebration of the child’s birth. the extra fabric on the outside can be used to cover the baby, or it perhaps used to rock the cradle. the second idea was of a round piece of fabric that could be linked as desired. i used the pieces to create clothing in the image of a mother. some of the same pieces can be joined together to make a cocoon cradle-a metaphor for the way that dna provides a link from the past to the future. hot steam enables the material to be freely formed, but when it sets, it firmly retains its shape. this property allows softness and firmness to co-exist in the same sheet of material.

DigiFAB@UHCoA with scott MARBLE and METALAB : this semester METALAB partners andrew VRANA and joe MEPPELINK taught with scott MARBLE at university of houston college of architecture in a visiting critics studio and digital fabrication seminar. the focus of the work has been on “designed assemblies” and the use of parametric software (grasshopper and paneling tools). the project was to design the jury space within the new student services center in the architecture building. The students have developed a ceiling cloud that is proposed to clip on to an modified suspended ceiling grid using lightweight folded aluminum panels that are designed to incrementally change dimension and drape into the space below. constraints and variables within the parametric models allowed for the extraction of 150 unique panels that are also perforated with their own individual pattern.

markWATSON: the project is concerned with a museum typology informed by a very specific architectural language and experiential affect. this affect is based on tangential continuity as a spatial mediator and structural technique.

katlyn REICHELT + dana ELKHOURY: in precedent study, current building form and program was explored. often letter forms exist within current building types, and program is flattened to the lower levels. although these letter forms may have value, current programmatic conditions are not sensitive to the smaller communities in which we live our lives. using current formal letter types and adding varying program based on the letter forms inherent organization, new building forms are created through a strategy which gives each building type its own genetic code based on programmatic needs. by using multiple letter forms in a single building we are able to achieve a more interactive and responsible building typology for the individual occupants and the city.

from BMW press release: the new s1000rr offers the highest standard of technology. bmw ’s new supersports is by far the lightest machine of its calibre. one of the features that ensures this light weight is the aluminium bridge frame integrating the engine tilted to the front at an angle of 32° as a loadbearing element for optimum torsional stiffness on minimum weight…combining low weight with superior stability and a high standard of robust strength. developing the s1000rr, bmw motorrad has given particular attention to the superior ergonomics of the machine, focusing consistently on the rider’s individual requirements.

monochromatic human forms dissolve in the editorial work of YOU creatives collaborative. in this piece for twill magazine, overlapping textures and transparencies blur the boundaries between black and white, foreground and background, solid and void. the subjects feet no longer rely on the ground plane and they float within the frame of the image.

ayaka ONO: the project is to design the current easterwood airport in college station, texas with integrating the existing building and new design. and the aim of this project is to create a blending modern airport which shows turbulence. my idea came from a bernini sculpture and some biological materials. the art offered an abstraction or configuration which i could apply to my design. the analog process was done with gelatin and some paints materials.

michael SZIVOS + jose GONZALEZ: we were commissioned by stiletto to contribute 6 pages for their winter 08/09 issue. the title of the issue is utopies and the magazine’s editor, laurence benaïm, asked us to respond to the topic of utopia with digital images created using six featured shoes designed by prada, miu miu, jil sander, dior, louis vuitton, and céline. we wanted to do something fantastical and simple so we started by looking at the work of superstudio. for each image we created a landscape or environment made of attenuated tiles.
