Werner Herzog’s beautiful Cave of Forgotten Dreams explores 3D’s ability to convey depth and define space in new ways for film. with 50 films slated to be released this year alone Is 3D the future of cinema or passing hype?

I really hope that 3D loses some steam, I think its great when it serves a purpose (ie, Avatar’s immersing of the viewer into sci-fi world), but so much crap out there is pushing 3D in post-production (Clash of The Titans) and it just makes me want to cringe. Iagree that the potential of 3D is amazing, its getting rushed along too quickly to achieve automatic Avatar numbers at the box office. I can’t even imagine how great a new and artful 3D adaptation of something with complexity (ie, Dune) would be on screen. Although Avatar was visually inventive, its story was basically an update of Dances with Wolves.

and a touch of ferngully/pocahantas. i thought avatar was fairly insulting to the viewer in terms of story. as was TRON, bordered on excruciating, but i thought the visuals on IMAX screen were pretty cool. Both would’ve been better if they were half the length and dropped stories + dialogue. extended music videos…

i think 3D will get less distracting and the glasses will eventually disappear (ie nintendo 3DS) and all movies will have some new level of depth. The industry hasn’t pushed and invested in technology/innovation this hard since the 50s when they feared no one would come out because of TV. That bred wider screens and formats like technicolor and cinemascope that made the cinema different than home viewing. Now with 55″ LED screens, blu-ray, and instant movie downloads the same situation exists. but it definitely doesn’t work when applied as afterthought for marketing. When actually shot on stereoscopic cameras or iMAX equipment the results are amazing like Herzog’s movie or the trailer before Tron for the new documentary on african animals. i think the new batch of 3D actually looks better and richer when actually shot in camera rather than digital effects made 3D.

was TRON worth seeing? did the visuals beat out the bad story?
