2012 Digital Architecture Laboratory Summer Workshop: Articulated Surface

The summer workshop 2012 of the “Digital Architecture Laboratory” (DAL) chose the atrium of the School of Architecture of Hunan University, Changsha, to set the general framework for an installation which catalyses the potential of articulated surfaces. Students of nine groups were briefed to propose a design that activates the unemployed atrium space. After having analyzed the current deficiencies of the atrium, a series of 1:1 scale design mock-ups helped the groups to adjust and refine their design proposals as well as encouraged them to consider befitting materials at the early stage of the design.

suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Farah NASRI: “Once Upon a Greek Goddess” is a collection of 6 rings. Each named after a Greek Goddess, the rings follow the concept of Plato’s The Symposium of them being able to fit into one another as if once separated by Zeus: “According to Greek Mythology, Humans were originally created with 4 arms, 4 legs, and a head with 2 faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into 2 separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves”—Plato’s The Symposium.

Rui LIU (L-U-D studio): Rapid urbanisation throughout fast growing countries, such as Brazil, India or China, has resulted in a neglect of integrated-design of how we utilize water. In an increasingly urban world, it is important to step back and review that the built environment is truly in need of engaging with the specific requirements of water management at a local scale.

Aleksandar BURSAC: The design intent was to retain the existing atmosphere of the river beach, and to introduce its qualities into the educational environment or the New Media institute. The “institute” and the “beach” are formulated as initial typologies that polarize the space in between, creating the field of transitional types. These types are exhibited differently, on some occasion they are more inclined towards the character of the beach while at others they are closer to the idea of the institute.

The 2011 Egyptian Revolution proved to be the beginning of an end in Egypt. On January 25, 2011 up-rises began in an effort to overthrow Hosni Mubaraks’ Regime. Millions of protestors from all socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the fall of Mubarak’s dictatorship. After continued weeks of protest and pressure, Mubarak resigned from office on February 11, 2011. Ironically though, what ended on February 11, 2011 marked the beginning of new and uncertain Egypt.

Michael ISKANDAR: This project continues to investigate the architectural conditions of symmetries and repetitions, in what became my own personal fixation on how the future can accept a more contemporary means of gothic architecture. Taking the affect and geometric principles of traditional gothic vault patterns, the project manifests itself in how external facade systems can convey an internal organizational logic that is both culturally functional and beautifully new.
