    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

lauren TICHY: Pirate Infrastructures: Post-Suburban Archipelagia. This thesis explores the implications of pirating built suburban developments. Control of both the built environment and its economic potentiality is shifted from the results of failed and outmoded development marketing studies to the actions of the real end-user. Researching the suburban condition, and what created it, enables a systems-based approach in considering the state of Western American suburbia during the most recent real-estate bust.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

jt BACHMAN: This semester-long research project investigated the use of two dimensional images to generate three dimensional spatial configurations. The initial iterations of this process generated iconic yet impenetrable masses. In the final iteration of this process, each tetrahedron was scaled down and subtracted from the parent mass ultimately creating an inverse solid/void relationship between the interior and the exterior. What was at first an object to be looked at, became a space which begins to imply inhabitation.

julie a. SIMPSON: This work began with an interest in the meticulous and obsessive nature of restraining the natural environment of Versailles. Seeking to strategically subvert this situation in specific moments within the site, the architecture begins to question the duration of preservation and imagine a space and experience of interruption.

moatasem ESMAT: Project L.E.V. represents my ideologies of how can sustainability be represented in a new contemporary mold that breaks the usual dull meaning of sustainability. the project went under many studies to ensure the resulting of a staggering, constructable structure. Later on these studies were formed under the name of “Paradigm Shift”, with the “time” element being implemented through the studies it showed the true meaning of how a structure (as entities) can evolve and grow to shape itself until it reaches the desired point of timeline.

    LUNAR CRATER CULTURAL CENTER COMPETITION
    Honorable Mention — $100

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

gabriel a. HUERTA: The design of the Lunar Crater Cultural Center (LC3) is based on a vision that the proposed design is not an end product, but the starting point for an ever-evolving building on the lunar surface. By utilizing up and coming fabrication technologies like Counter Crafting, the LC3 would be a conglomeration of “3D printed” components. The technology would not only allow for minor modifications and refurbishment, but could potentially support the emergent expansion of the base building form to accommodate future programmatic needs.

philip h. WILCK: The project shows the design proposal for a musicpavilion at the Stadtpark in Vienna (Austria). Rethinking the concept of a musicpavilion the architectural ensemble of different geometrical and material configurations offers the opportunity for a multilayered and complex music experience. The system includes central positioned sound shells in dependence on biological shell geometries like an ear or a mussle (biomimicry) . . . and a sound booth system of closed capsules for an intense, individual space for sound . . . spreading about the area. Another elements provide spaces and areas for a fully self-sufficient energy supply regarding ecological thinking, host interaction and active materials.

    —‘Speed and Politics,’ Paul Virilio

The main purpose of this project is to combine three notions into one spatial object.: speed, perception and landscape.
Based upon Paul Virilo’s essay Speed and Politics, speed is perceived in two ways: as a causing factor of changes of culture and civilization, and as a issue of (de)urbanization, which prepare ground for new spatial objects (spaces).

GRAMAZIO & KOHLER: Flight Assembled Architecture is the first installation to be built by flying machines. Conceived as an architectural structure at a scale of a 600m high “vertical village”, the installation addresses radical new ways of thinking and materializing architecture as a physical process of dynamic formation. Here, a multitude of mobile agents working in parallel and acting together as scalable production means. Those are programmed to interact, lift, transport and assemble small modules in order to erect a building structure that synthesizes a rigorous architectural approach and a visionary autonomous system design.
