suckerPUNCH: what or who influenced this project?

greg LYNN: I was influenced by an ex-assistant of mine who stayed on in my position at the ETHZ named Matthias Kohler who is using robotic arms to place standard masonry units like bricks and blocks as well as Office DA who must have inspired him by building something similar in China with intricate brick patterns using manual labor and curved templates.

florian FEND / maria JOANNA-HELINURM / mirko DANELUZZO: The building is composed of four main units (or lobes) connected into one large mass by peripheral annexations. The annexes are used to define the boundaries of the outdoor rooms, to blur the perimeter of the building and provide vertical circulation. The extensions filter, frame, contain services and access points. The overall building mass uses a combination of skylights and surface fissures to capture light and give depth to the complex.

mirko DANELUZZO: The music center is located on the waterfront in Toronto, an evident part of the city’s skyline, representing the vibrant on growing music scene. The project uses the preexisting Canada Malting Silos industrial building to convert it into the contemporary form of a cultural contamination beacon. The project is defined by a series of layers that have different performative qualities embedded that modify the character of the building as a person flows seamlessly through the space and experiences the curated environment of the building.

other space odysseys presents three approaches to the idea of an adventurous journey that started 40 years ago after the 1969 moon landing. featuring the work of architects greg LYNN, michael MALTZAN, and alessandro POLI, other space odysseys comes at a time when space exploration is the subject of renewed enthusiasm, but also of debate which questions its justification. scientific expeditions, satellite launches, and the emergence of space tourism are pushing us to reconsider our relationship with the planet. for these architects, space has provided not only a rich context for experimentation, but also an extreme condition in which to test new ideas for life on earth.

cody DAVIS: this project is a manipulation of the baroque forms found in bernini’s sculptural compositions, replete in the two arms encircling piazza san pietro and in the baldacchino at the heart of the church. respecting the principles of plasticity, proportion, and symmetry, the proposed “third arm” finds a state of transition between the horizontal continuity of the surrounding colonnades and the relentless vertical rhythm of the columns themselves. undulating surfaces culminate in a dome volume, which is suspended by looping scrolls.

nora GRAW: conventional films are restricted in physical conditions of the film set or collage an artificial surrounding to suggest the wanted atmosphere and aesthetic. animated films create an abstract world that mimics qualities of the physical that are extracted and exaggerated in animated films where characteristics are adopted to create an environment that through its aesthetic creates an all-around coulisse. the goal is to create an environment for this profession with characteristics of that coulisse layering of scenes and interconnect various stage settings to take part in the “real world”.

Dumene COMPLOI: in the contemporary architectural process the technique of the dissolving surface into a three dimensional continuous structural space, highlights the challenge of environmental enclosure. using the department store as a testing ground, the approach focuses on a smooth transition between structure and skin in scale and material, in order to allow the creation of an environmental enclosure that in certain areas creates spatial poche.
