suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Feyrouz ASHOURA: The “Breathtakers” is a hypothetical story about the evolution of the human anatomy. We are stuck between two eras, a time where the human kind has come to face one of the biggest changes of its history. As I am very inspired by the human being and the structure of our body itself, I constantly am in a pursuit of converting the ugliness I can recognize in humans to a so far undiscovered beauty. The whole idea behind this project was built all around the respiratory system, while I imagined it would undergo a mutation to follow the need to breathe under water by pushing our anatomy to another extent of our development, a transition between two kinds—the fusion triggered by the terrestrial and the underwater world that blooms into a newborn species.

This season, Iris’ inspiration is yet another scientific experiment; this time her inspiration is drawn from a project lead by architect Philip Beesley called Hylozoic Ground. His almost living sculptures and environments suggest that a future city could operate as a living being in which Hylozoic Ground offers a vision for a new generation of responsive architecture. Beesley collaborates with people from many different disciplines including Rachel Armstrong, an experimental chemist who works with ‘living technology’ such as Synthetic Biology—the engineering for living systems.

United Nude, January 2012—Among members of the fashion world, Iris van Herpen is known for pushing the boundaries of Haute Couture. On January 23rd she showed for the second time as an official guest of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, and once again wowed the audience.

Models stepped out in “Fang” shoes with ten sharp teeth to each foot—the product of van Herpen’s fifth successful collaboration with United Nude. The shape of the wedge is so complex that each one consists of fiberglass and carbon fiber, made in a slow molding process. It is not yet certain whether these shoes will come to market as a limited edition, as was the case with previous Iris van Herpen x United Nude designs, but it is worth keeping an eye out for them.
