Painter Perry Hall uses a set of experimental techniques that draw upon the organizing principles found in nature; his project integrates traditional painting, design, sound, improvisation and filmmaking in a body of work that spans two decades. Hall approaches paint not as an inert extensive material, but activates it as an intensive dynamic material force that has the ability to self-organize and show (as Nikola Tesla put it) “signs of living principles within.”

suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

perry HALL: Images of sound waves moving through paint that were filmed live on HD Video.They’re made by channeling bass frequencies into a custom set of tanks and altering the composition of the paint in conjunction with the parameters of the sound. I’ve been making these “Sound Drawings” since about 2002. This is another technique I use to add time, behavior and transformation to painting. All the work is done with oil, acrylic without any digital tools, although its all influenced by digital discourse and tools.
