We set forth a holistic framework, embracing the needs of society and the capacities of technology, in which a renewable and recursive, high resolution, self-powered piezo-based synthetic ecology can flourish.

    How computer technologies and digital fabrication techniques give architects unprecedented tools for crafting performance and aesthetics through cross-disciplinary collaboration. . . . Boat, airplane, and automobile design tools and software are now applied to architectural projects using robotics and high-strength, low-weight, carbon fiber composites. Greg Lynn’s studio and Mark Foster Gage’s seminar at Yale with participants Frank Gehry, Lise Ann Couture, Chris Bangle, and Greg Foley, among others generated a lively dialogue invigorating the future of design.

    Soo Sunny Park’’s installation Unwoven Light animates Rice Gallery’’s expansive space, transforming it into a shimmering world of light, shadow, and brilliant color. Suspended from the walls and ceiling, thirty-seven individually sculpted units are arranged as a graceful, twisting flow of abstract form. Entering the gallery there is no set path to follow. Instead, we are invited to meander slowly as one might stroll along a river’s edge, stopping to admire the glints of light that dance on the water’s surface.

    Johnny C. LIN: The series of projects presented here is the result of an on-going exploration of the transformative nature of surface quality. The work is inspired by the complexity, opulence and drama of Gothic cathedrals and Baroque architecture. The second influence is the industrial space. Factories are significant here because their existence primarily rooted in functional necessities and the requirements for mass production. The Industrial Era signified the shift of power in human consciousness from God as an omnipotent figure to that of men.

  • MoCA: Surface-to-Volume

    This project is a sixteen foot high inhabitable pavilion which will be exhibited in The New Sculpturalism show at the MoCA Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles, opening June 1, 2013. It was chosen in an invited competition held by the Museum last summer, and now the heat is on to realize it.

    The project is a study of surface-to-volume transformations, where mass is achieved by pushing into a surface like a fist through a rubber sheet. In this case, chunky objects are pushed into exterior skins, creating volumetric effects on the interior. The perimeter edges of the three components of the piece are razor-thin, creating visual tension between the realms of 2-D/flat and 3-D/massive.

    Harold-Sprague SOLIE & Geoffrey SALVATORE: This research explores the aggregation of varied and repeated units with an emphasis on innovative connection techniques. The material culminated in Stalactites, a full-scale horizontal surface installation. These techniques were limited to the material itself, with an ambition to not introduce any foreign connectors or materials into the process.

  • Eye Candy
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

    “Eye Candy” is a site specific installation for the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. The work explores the cultural and phenomenological potential of synthetic surface finishes at architectural scale, and is a deliberate flirtation with the contemporary attraction to the glossy, the playful, the fictional and the pop. The unique iconography of this installation puts forth a clear statement that architectural material finishes have the communicative potential to enter into the imaginary realm of our “eye-candy” culture, exploiting our most superficial of obsessions including desire, age, gender, media, consumption, and delight.

    “Eye Candy” runs through the 8th of March, 2013.

    Orproejct: Or2 is a single surface roof structure which reacts to sunlight. The polygonal segments of the surface react to ultra-violet light, mapping the position and intensity of solar rays.

  • mexico city MEXICO

    This portal, conceived through spatial design, activated by the city dwellers and the everyday stimuli of Mexico City’s life, becomes a new public piece in one of the city’s most important avenues, Paseo de la Reforma.

    Nescafé comissioned 8 artists (Francisco Serrano, Mario Schjetnan, Bernardo Gómez-Pimienta, Fernanda Canales, Manuel Cervantes, Alejandro Quintanilla and Alejandro Castro) to develop specific installations with the basic requirement of utilizing a maximum of 1500 metal coffee mugs.
