    robert lee BRACKETT, III (Digital Nouveau): Expressions :: Synaptic Resistive Skin

    Layered relationships incorporating synaptic impulses, behavioral dependencies, tectonic resistance & temporal latency converge, producing a space of emergent surface patterns. A resistive skin dances to an adaptive pseudo-aperiodic rhythm generated with Maya’s simulation and animation tools. The presence of time shifts from a linear index of progressing behavior to a generative component with instantaneous emergence.

    The great premiere . . . The first heartbeat . . . and the bricks come alive, each with a story to tell us . . . How it enhances itself, becomes an unmistakable member of the family with its unique character ? Does it also shares human emotions that lived inside its body ? Both phsically and emotionally, no doubt it is alive, staring at us dramatically with all the secrets and whispers to be explored. . . .

    daniel ALAJAJIAN: Imagery plays a major role in the Los Angeles landscape. It is a rapidly growing presence across various mediums. Buildings and images collide on a daily basis in the form of billboards, advertisements, graffiti, visual projections and video.

    Architectural designs, such as Robert Venturi’s Decorated Shed, study the separation of the sign and the building, ultimately exploring the relationship between the sign and the buildings’ context.

    keti CARAPULI: This project is about an architecture that celebrates materiality and its performance under air, water and light inputs. A design, which feeds back and forth from digital to material, from design to fabrication, from a choreographed movement to material fluctuation. Constraints evolving from the digital to the real generating a new sensibility that goes beyond the representation.

    nam il JOE, laura e. LO, & mark t. NICOL: Formative to our design intent is a desire to use the plastic particulates that are concentrated in the world’s ocean gyres as a productive building material. To do so we have looked to existing technologies to develop a system that would allow us to extract these plastics, reprocess them, and form them into strands. These strands could then be embedded with additional materials increasing their tensile strength and tendency to bundle together.

    Iris van Herpen presents Hybrid Holism, her most recent Haute Couture collection for A/W 2012-13.

    ///

    This season, Iris’ inspiration is yet another scientific experiment; this time her inspiration is drawn from a project lead by architect Philip Beesley called Hylozoic Ground. His almost living sculptures and environments suggest that a future city could operate as a living being in which Hylozoic Ground offers a vision for a new generation of responsive architecture. Beesley collaborates with people from many different disciplines including Rachel Armstrong, an experimental chemist who works with ‘living technology’ such as Synthetic Biology—the engineering for living systems.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

    kyle MILLER: This design proposal for rehabilitating the Pushinsky Cinema Facade in Moscow seeks to showcase and celebrate the virtual aesthetic potentials latent in non-representational architectural surface design, design which strategically employs color, pattern, texture, and translucency to create non-cognitive, visual sensations that leave the viewer void of mental representations and void of signified external imagery. The project is fundamentally about reconsidering ornamentation in contemporary architectural design and capitalizing on the capabilities of parametric design to simultaneously achieve variation and repetition across a field of self-similar building components (in this case, facade panels).

    Zaha Hadid Architects design a limited-production vessel, Z Boat, for American art dealer Kenny Schachter.

    “The asymmetrical design is sculptural in appearance while practically affording more seating accommodations. In a sense, the bespoke boat is as much a work of art as a Cisitalia sports car in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The idea is to think of vessels and vehicles as highly individualistic expressions of art, architecture and design reflecting the edge of what is possible using the most advanced means, including materials, software systems and methods of fabrication.
