Since the mid-’90s, architecture has accelerated its move away from the discourse of the architectural object towards the discourse of the architectural field. The vicissitudes of the architectural object has lost its uncanny appeal, and recent work is more often than not circumscribed by the mental image of an underlying network of relations that is deep, dynamic, and more real than the architectural object itself. Like Janus, the transition from object to field has had many faces but has shared a single body moving towards the virtual. This lecture offers reasons for pause in this move toward relationism. . . .

BMW i8 Concept—emotional, dynamic, and efficient.

The concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics created excitement and very positive feedback at the IAA 2009. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics made it clear that an emotional sports car with the fuel economy of a small car is no contradiction and could soon be reality. After successful initial testing of the vehicle concept, the decision for a series-production vehicle was quickly made. The BMW i8 Concept is the next step in the evolution of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept.

Studio Lynn is one of three studios teaching architectural design in the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The studio is directed by Los Angeles-based architect Greg Lynn and his team of assistant professors as a 3 year Master course with students of all levels studying design topics together. Studio Lynn studio focuses on the composition of intricately connected, subtly varied, continuously differentiated elements in non-modular dimensional series. Students’ sensibilities are attuned to the rhythmic patterns and undulations of calculus as they apply to architecture. We critically and creatively embrace the digital tools that have recently burst into architecture and effloresced in a myriad of forms and shapes. • Mark COUSINS
    london UNITED KINGDOM

Mark Cousins’s Friday lectures recommence by addressing the architectural and artistic use of the category “everyday life”—a realm which seems immune to interpretation. The course seeks to show how the ‘everyday’ relates to the Cliché (the topic of last year’s lectures) and demonstrates that the phrase is imbued with philosophical presuppositions: it can mean the given, appearance or sometimes the concrete. “Everyday” frequently involves the use of what the course represents as the “imaginary.” This lecture series will continue its investigation of architecture and design from both the point of view of the cliché and the imaginary.
