Rui LIU (L-U-D studio): Rapid urbanisation throughout fast growing countries, such as Brazil, India or China, has resulted in a neglect of integrated-design of how we utilize water. In an increasingly urban world, it is important to step back and review that the built environment is truly in need of engaging with the specific requirements of water management at a local scale.

Aleksandar BURSAC: The design intent was to retain the existing atmosphere of the river beach, and to introduce its qualities into the educational environment or the New Media institute. The “institute” and the “beach” are formulated as initial typologies that polarize the space in between, creating the field of transitional types. These types are exhibited differently, on some occasion they are more inclined towards the character of the beach while at others they are closer to the idea of the institute.

    Ehab GHALI: What and Where?///
The 2011 Egyptian Revolution proved to be the beginning of an end in Egypt. On January 25, 2011 up-rises began in an effort to overthrow Hosni Mubaraks’ Regime. Millions of protestors from all socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the fall of Mubarak’s dictatorship. After continued weeks of protest and pressure, Mubarak resigned from office on February 11, 2011. Ironically though, what ended on February 11, 2011 marked the beginning of new and uncertain Egypt.

Michael ISKANDAR: This project continues to investigate the architectural conditions of symmetries and repetitions, in what became my own personal fixation on how the future can accept a more contemporary means of gothic architecture. Taking the affect and geometric principles of traditional gothic vault patterns, the project manifests itself in how external facade systems can convey an internal organizational logic that is both culturally functional and beautifully new.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

James ROPER: The pursuit of release or transcendence occur most purely within the seemingly opposing natures of religion and ‘sin’. This is dealt with explicitly in my Rapture series in which porn stars shed their carnal bodies giving way to an abstract purity beneath. The idea of release from the material to the spiritual is apparent in many religions as if there were a divine soul trapped in our earthly bodies, this is also analogous to contemporary imagery such as that found in comic books, specifically the way in which Clark Kent, a normal man, sheds his clothes to become a Superman.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Dale STRONG: This thesis is investigating formal architectural conditions existing between abstraction and legibility in order to challenge notions of sobriety and solemnity within the discipline of architecture. The context of the site, located on the campus of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, is architecturally earnest with neighbors like Mies Van der Rohe’s Brown Pavilion and Raphael Moneo’s Audrey Jones Beck building. To counter the seriousness of the surrounding and help lighten the mood, this thesis will make a serious attempt to introduce comic and licentious characteristics to the new building.
