cranbrook ART MUSEUM: american house 08 embodies bill massie’s drastically divergent practice from traditional architecture through his use of computer-based fabrication technology for efficient, precise, and customized fabrication. constructed entirely within the architect’s 12,000 square-foot studio just minutes away from the historic saarinen-designed cranbrook campus, american house 08 was designed, in part, at full scale. by composing in real-time, bill massie is able to negotiate between material and concept, relying on human reaction to the actual space and details. utilizing computer-based fabrication technology for production, the house consists of a prefabricated steel frame, in-filled with manufactured structural panels all filtered through a process of digital fabrication.

jennifer COATES’ vividly colored, metaphysical paintings utilize the conventions of landscape as an anchor for hallucinatory visions that reference the mind and the body simultaneously. expanses of sky or sea coalesce into pools of thought-like reflection; clouds of geometry warp into an ecstatic vortex; horizons fissure and swell like skin; and intricate vines tangle into knots of energized ganglia. coates contrasts an atmospheric radiance with meticulous detail, iconic directness with allusive abstraction. varied painterly approaches are positioned against each other to create a disjunctive but idealistic experience of place.

spadaconcept:the company’s vision is centered on “functional design”, which, according to ercole spada, means to express the functionality of an object through its shape. following this vision spadaconcept came up with a genuinely breaking product, something bold an daring. far from creating a show car where anything is allowed, spadaconcept has worked creatively but within strict feasibility constraints, in order to reach the quality standards of a niche, handcrafted production. the performance of this car is maximized by introducing aerodynamic lines such to mould a light and essential body. the result is an extremely stable and manageable car, able to achieve good racing performances by exploiting at the best the power of its engine, with an original and nimble shape and essential but elegant interiors.

digitized lines ebb and flow through the real-time renderings of andreas schlegel. schlegel’s processing utilizes simulated fluid dynamics in processing to develop dense compositions of lines that coagulate to form sophisticated surfaces within the computer screen. from his varying density of single colored lines a wide color palette emerges into an infinite gradient.

stephen e. MORA: this project addresses the conventional use of the architectural joint and attempts to transform it into a generative element that becomes dialogic with the other building components. typically the joint is understood and treated as a responsive element that allows the resolution of complex curvature and negotiation of building systems. in short, it is the point of junction between components. though formal exploration, the joint is used to develop an architectural language that has the capacity to work on a gradient of scales and levels.

sarah SCHNEIDER: the focus of this project is to create optical effects and views. in this space station these effects can generate a confusing perception of the different horizons. since there is a shift between the gravitational (artificial gravitation through centrifugal force) and the human (view) horizon, views can create a kind of augmented reality where the observer’s reality collides with the reality of the scene he watches.

throbbing tendons and bulging musculature characterize the concept design of artist johannes muecke. muecke creates environments where the human form is hyper-detailed through both the realistic and the grotesque. his three-dimensional patterns are based in this world but expand into that of another through their intense clustering and multiplication.

bmw design group: along the side of the car all the lines, surfaces and details lead the eye from the front end along the stretched engine compartment and clearly defined a-pillars before converging at the centre of the vehicle. two expressive lines are drawn from the front along the flanks of the vehicle towards the engine compartment area. The flow of lines begins in a straight, disciplined fashion at the front end, lowering the optical centre of gravity of the bmw m1 hommage and highlighting its low-slung stance. from the middle of the car, however, the lines break up. The power of the design is focused precisely where the power of the vehicle also lies - at the engine. strong, sensuous sweeping lines accentuate the car’s mid-engine concept, the design emphasizing the mechanics behind it, the engineering skills and the engine expertise of the bmw group.

zamak artist olivier bucheron’s world is plagued by a bulging cyclops and faceless astronauts. bucheron’s forms all appear to be swollen to the point of explosion creating a stimulating tension in the work. although all of his designs are made with a similar minimal modeling technique, they each appear unique through their individual seaming and panelization. each form appears to be a conglomeration of cells oozing and blistering into one another at an otherworldly scale.
