suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

paul CASTELLANOS: Whereas Mies van der Rohe’s Crown Hall, for instance, defined a columns structural integrity by the perception of continuity juxtaposed by discontinuous mullions, this project defines the structural character of the column by its orientation. Vertical elements transition into secondary elements and account for spatial variations, circulation, and lighting. The orientation of the columns subdivide the open plan into smaller spaces and renders enclosure as delusive.

suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

paul CASTELLANOS + michael KARAYAN: Sited on the wetlands of Marina Del Ray, California, alongside Ballona Creek bike path, is a spa treatment center for patients diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The design investigates translucent and transparent barriers as beneficiary transitions for patients going from one space to the next. The lifting of the program and the programmatic transitions lends itself to the concept of “presage” where the progression of space can be foreshadowed by the occupant.
