  • cairo EGYPT

    suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

daniel DENDRA: the average speed of a car in a city is around 11km/h - the average speed of a bicycle is around 15km/h. still the trend in many emerging markets is from the bicycle to the car. the result of this trend and the expanding mega cities can be experienced in cairo. a city where a car trip can take 15min or 3 hours for the same distance. a city where it is almost impossible to cross a street. a city that is dominated by car pollution and where the public spaces become not usable anymore for pedestrians. for this reason the new york times entitled cairo as the noisiest city in the world: “it’s so noisy with horn honking and teaming people, as a matter of fact, that it’s like living in a factory.”

zaha hadid architects: as part of the burnham plan centennial celebrations, the burnham pavilion by zaha HADID architects triggers the visitors’ curiosity and encourages them to consider the future of chicago. the design merges new formal concepts with the memory of burnham’s bold, historic urban planning. superimpositions of spatial structures with hidden traces of burnham’s plan are overlaid and inscribed within the structure to create unexpected results. “the burnham plan centennial is all about celebrating the bold plans and big dreams of daniel burnham’s visionary plan of chicago. it’s about reinvention and improvement on an urban scale and about welcoming the future with innovative ideas and technologies.

I.M.A.D.E: morpholuminesence is a kinetic ceiling prototype, originally described as a simple surface in rhino. the surface was triangulated into panels or “petals,” laser cut from white acrylic, which hang from stems of clear tubular acrylic with planar elbow joints. the acrylic tubes were laser cut using custom fabricated jigs to create angles and grooves along each piece. the compound joints of each petal were created using unique laser cut acrylic angles and pivoting model airplane hinges. the surface is actuated using monofilament attached to small, high torque servos. the servos are mounted to acrylic towers above the mdf top surface, providing maximum leverage. variable value rgb leds above the petal surface are tuned across the visual spectrum to provide a wide variety of lighting effects.

johan VOORDOUW: the project describes an annexed library for the museum of manuscripts at villa d’este in tivoli, italy. rather than exploring the configuration of conventional spaces the project sought to explore the library through a series of books, the book becoming an expression of physical and imagined spaces. using a combination of text, illustrations and sls models the project formed architectural space on and through the page, an oscillating interplay between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space and experience, one that can only be fully appreciated when flipping cover to cover.

zbrushcentral: what inspires you as an artist?

nick ZUCCARELLO: well, i would say that a big part of my inspiration early on came from comic books. i’ve always been a big fan of super heroes; i’ve always loved human anatomy. one of my favorite comic book artists at the beginning was jim lee. i still love his work quite a bit. mark silvestri, todd mcfarlane. a little bit later i got to be a big fan of travis charist. i love that guy’s work. recently i’ve become a really big fan of alex ross. i really love his work. i’m continually amazed by the sheer quantity of work that this man has produced and the quality level of what he has output.

gabrielESQUIVEL:“life is nothing but instability and disequilibrium… a swelling tumult continuously on the verge of explosion.” ~ georges bataille

“swell” emerged from the posture of presenting an argument emerging from architecture itself. is it possible to talk about architecture from its own discourse? this project fits within the continuum of architecture through references from works of the classics to early modernists. a significant part of the research revolved around the discussion of classical ornamentation: a layer of architecturalization that was perhaps best articulated by the early modernist louis sullivan as seen in his intricate, highly articulated guaranty bank corner to cornice detailing.

caliper STUDIO: the genetic stair is the centerpiece of a three thousand square foot duplex apartment renovation in a mckim mead & white landmarked building on new york’s upper west side. the architectural strategy for the renovation removed all existing vertical circulation and connected the two floors with a new feature stair, located centrally in the apartment, free from all walls and supported only at the top and bottom. the clients, two art collectors with a keen interest in supporting emerging artists and designers, engaged and supported caliper studio’s experimental research-focused design process.

amanda LEVETE ARCHITECTS: the lounge is a loosely defined architectural concept about a space that is animated by the movement of people in transit. a drop of water creating a series of ripples became our metaphor for transforming space through movement. just as the ripple causes intricate moiré patterns in water, the corian lounge installation is about revealing the moment of change through visual complexity. with the repetition of identical elements that have been physically transformed, a frozen moment is captured through a sequence of dynamic surfaces creating kinetic visual effects. more than just an expression of the material, the surface transformations push the technical possibilities of dupont™ corian® by exploiting its pliability and using the twisted geometry of the sheets to bring structural integrity.

suckerPUNCH: what or who influenced this project?

jesse PIETILÄ: my intention is to design a screen, which represents a new way to divide space in the era of visual culture. my approach is based on the perception of a visually impaired person. i bring the concept of visual imparity among normally perceiving people by means of a new way to divide space. this is realized by creating a method to restrict and guide the movement of light thus interspatial sights. the screen produces a disturbance into field of vision and investigates a possibility to create an ambivalent spatial experience.
