Peter Trummer will present a lecture in Knowlton Hall’s Gui Auditorium at 5:30PM on Wednesday, September 18. The lecture is free and open to the public. Trummer is an architect and researcher based in Amsterdam. He currently is Professor and Head of the Institute for Urban Design & Spatial Planning at the University of Innsbruck, and formerly was Head of the Associative Design Research Program at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam.

While ever more sophisticated digital techniques have become the norm in many advanced design-research studios, the application of the digital in urban design is still somewhat untested ground. “Parametric” concepts, of course, have been postulated in large correlative networks, where all things matter to all other things and where behavioral input is both traceable from and dependent on this abstract and invisible scaffold.

Andrew CHOI & Harrison STEINBUCH: This assignment revolved around a Performance Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The project was an investigation into the term chiaroscuro, a set of representational techniques from the Renaissance that creates a contrast between the form and its context. In discussing a “painterly effect,” we talked about a painting’s ability to use hard shadows to represent space and distort your perception of form in space.

Scott CLAASSEN: Totally Useless Totems develops a series of architectural totems and their configurations, free of prescribed function or meaning in order to create spaces defined by subjective relationships. These totems are objects that have figure, but shape the space around them primarily through experiential, tactile, or narrative relationships. In this way they embody both the graphic characteristics of images as well as the spatial potential of objects occupying territory.

Kathy VELIKOV & Geoffrey THÜN (RVTR): Nervous Ether is a full-scale responsive physical environment consisting of a cellular pneumatic skin, operating as an instrument to register and communicate remote environmental information while also generating specific sensations and effects within the immediate (inhabitable) environment. It aims to lever the agency of air and information to spatially and physically materialize the immaterial into a palpable and sensate environment. The installation was undertaken through the 333 Summer Studio at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, August 2013.

Armando BUSSEY-SOLLEIRO, Edward LUCKMANN, Vichayuth MEENAPHANT, Ana Margarita WANG-ZUNIGA: The Life Aquatech investigates the relationship between the building systems that mediate between interior and exterior and architectural design by shifting from air-based systems to a water-based system. Human comfort is one of the main drivers of the investigation, seeking an ideal relationship between the user’s comfort in relation to temperature and how the building can self-regulate in order to provide it.
